Well that escalated quickly...

Winston and Julia sittin' behind a tree.
K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage.

First, I want to say that I really like their secret love. It's so dangerous, but it gives the book some livelihood. It's compelling to keep reading because eventually you know they'll get caught, but the question is; when?

This is a picture from the movie 1984.

Second, the title of this post is called "Well that escalated quickly...". I named it this, because their entire relationship was very out of the blue. On page 107, she secretly slides a note in his hand that says "I love you". This really confused me, because there was no foreshadowing that led up to this event. Before then he had never had a conversation with this girl, in fact, he absolutely hated her for just being pretty and young. She sat behind him in the two minutes of hate, she saw him on the other side of town where the proles live, and now she loves him? The only possible explanation that I have is that she likes his rebellious nature. She saw him on the other side of town and although it's not forbidden to go there; it's highly uncommon. A citizen under party control generally has no reason to be there other than official business. On page 122 she gives a small explanation that says "It was something in your face. I thought I'd take a chance. I'm good at spotting people who don't belong. As soon as I saw you I knew you were against them". It's very hard for me to believe that all it took for her to fall in love with him was that. What else do you think made her fall in love with Winston?

  1. Their relationship is unconventional, but the whole book is. I think once they both had a sort of understanding that they were on the same side(anti-gov) they clung to it because it's so rare in that soceity. Yes, it was a little far-fetched to say she was in love, but it's a book and like you said it got you interested.

  3. I think that both Winston and Julia had liked the fact of both being rebelious against the party together and that was fun for them. That was one thing they had in common, that no one else had. It was like they were made for eachother for that purpose. Although, maybe she had actual feelings for him. The story between Julia and Winston was a big interest and part of 1984. What do you think made Julia fall for Winston if you do not think it was just that, or do you have any ideas of what else it could have been?

    1. I completely agree with you. I think that Julia honestly was not really in love. I think she liked the idea of love and the idea of having some dangerous foreign thing that no one else had. Later on in the book there is no doubt in my mind that she actually loves him, but right now it's kind of an abstract thought to her.

  4. I think the reason that their relationship rose out of almost no where is because people like them are definitely craving for some type of relationship with someone else. Julia mentions in the book that he has had other affairs with other Party members, which is why I think she engaged first. Once they started spending time together, experiencing any type of relationship must be addicting. The fact that they are in love only makes it more interesting. Thats why I believe they escalated so quickly lol.

    1. I completely agree! They're so used to being boring and following the rules that when they finally break them; it makes them go all out.

  5. I think their relationship came about so fast because theirs not many people in their society that they have to realte to, so just for Julia to know that Winston is against the party is enough.

    1. That's what got to me though; he was just good enough. He probably wasn't what she really wanted, she was just intrigueed by him.
